glittering eyes
It is past midnight when I am rudely awakened from my sleep by the telephone. On the line is a man asking for shelter for a friend. She is completely lost. She is walking somewhere in Clémency. She has arrived on the last bus in a destination completely unknown to her. I get dressed and walk outside to look for her. On the street stands the lost woman. Her eyes beautifully made up with glitter. Her manicured nails sparkle in the dark night.
She has no idea how she got here. She is cold and tired. Our roaring '20s are still free. Gratefully, I let her get lost some more. In time. The next morning, the glitter is still on her eyes exactly like the day before. She is from the USA and will make her way again today.
At the kitchen bar sits a man from Australia. We get into a 'familiar' conversation. He owns a funeral home and, with lights in his eyes, tells us how he once made a deceased person look at the sparkling stars during his last ride.
With much glee, a couple from India rolls out of their room. They are so happy to have landed in Luxembourg and go to town with shining eyes. They give light so together. Wonderful.
A Belgian lady on the phone. She asks if she can come for two nights. She is on her way to Switzerland with her great love, but the persistent rain has made them decide to stop in Luxembourg. I welcome a loving couple. I estimate them to be in their 80s. They have been together for over 50 years and are glowing with happiness and love.
Wherever you are, wherever you go, shine as much as you can.
